“BIDDY MASON” — CITIZEN M

Located in the Citizen M hotel in Downtown, Los Angeles, this mural is a dedication to ‘Bridget ‘Biddy’ Mason. Biddy Mason was enslaved when she was brought to Los Angeles in 1851. She became a free woman and bought the block that citizenM LA is now built on in 1866. When she died she was one of the city’s wealthiest women. The illustration is inspired by her quote “If you hold your hand closed, nothing good can come in. The open hand is blessed for it gives an abundance even as it receives.”
