THE PROJECT
In 2021, Ben and Jerry’s asked me what the world would look like if it was rid of injustice and racism. The first idea that came to mind was freedom. A world where people, in particular Black people, can live in a space of feeling free and safe in everyday life. The result was to create a picture of a joyous world where Black people are simply existing. Existing in love, existing with family and the feeling of freedom. This image and my depiction of freedom became the center of their “Change is Brewing” campaign, a collaboration between the ice cream company and Black-owned businesses. The pint was available at select retailers and Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops nationwide. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the flavor went to grassroots initiatives bolstering community safety.
Additional Notes
Ingredients included coffee from Blk & Bold, the first Black-owned nationally distributed coffee company and brownies from Greyston bakery. The proceeds from the pint also supported the March for Black Lives and the People’s Response Act.

Change is Brewing – Ben & Jerry’s
THE PROJECT
In 2022 ahead of the US midterm elections, Ben & Jerry’s rebranded “Change is Brewing” to celebrate the power of Black voters. Along with our initial theme of freedom, this iteration included an emphasis on voting, as the pint served as a tool to encourage voter participation.
When thinking about the barriers to voting in marginalized communities the list is long. My idea was to show a joyous world where people of color have easy access to voting ballots and their voices are heard. The pint was a part of a local effort with Black Voters Matter in Georgia to ensure that Black voters, despite that state’s extreme efforts to make it harder for them and others to cast a ballot, would have their voices heard loud and clear.
Additional Notes
The pint is currently offered for a limited time and distributed throughout various retailers in the United States. Ingredients included coffee from Black owned retailer Blk & Bold, and brownies from Greyston bakery. You can find the pint with the Ben & Jerry’s locator here.
